Turning Policy Into Practice: How the i3 Program Helped Bridge National Change with Regional Impact
When federal policy changes, the ripple effects are rarely abstract. They show up in very real ways for donors, nonprofits, and the communities they support. With that in mind, Gulf Coast Community Foundation (Gulf Coast) leveraged the Invest In Incredible (i3) program to quickly convene a timely workshop focused on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), federal legislation designed to reshape key areas of tax policy that impacts charitable giving beginning in January 2026. By ensuring local nonprofits had the clarity and confidence they needed, the workshop was able to prepare them for what’s ahead.
The workshop, offered in both Sarasota and Venice, was led by Joe Carter, Gulf Coast’s Vice President of Philanthropy, and David Cahoone, J.D., attorney for Dorcey Law Firm. The session gave a robust overview of OBBB’s key elements, including changes to charitable tax incentives and shifts in timing and giving strategies that may affect the philanthropic sector. Together Joe and David translated complex policy into practical, real-world guidance, equipping nonprofit partners with insights they can apply with confidence.
For development professionals, the implications of OBBB go beyond policy details. The real challenge lies in navigating donor questions, uncertainty, and potential shifts in giving behavior as the changes take effect in 2026.
What set the workshop apart – and what defines the i3 program – is its focus on action. This was not a “sit and listen” lecture. Participants were encouraged to ask questions throughout the session and ultimately left with tangible ideas they could immediately use to prepare their teams for the changes ahead. From messaging strategies to facilitating donor conversations, attendees walked away prepared to respond thoughtfully and proactively.
At its core, this workshop reflected the importance of being proactive in moments of change, particularly when policy decisions have real implications for people and communities. When nonprofits are informed and equipped with the right information and resources, they are better positioned to maintain donor trust and continue creating meaningful change across our region.
Through i3, Gulf Coast remains committed to empowering nonprofit leaders with the knowledge, tools, and the confidence they need – especially when change is on the horizon.
