Taking a Stand for Civility

Because It MattersAs members of a community, civility matters. To all of us.

We learned there is hard science as well as common sense behind that simple concept when psychologist and best-selling author Daniel Goleman, PhD, addressed our community on social intelligence. Dr. Goleman explained how new research in social neuroscience shows that our emotions are contagious. In our daily interactions, we actually affect one another’s physiology, for better or for worse. If we all have the ability to spread positive feelings, then the payoff is not only feeling better ourselves, but also making our community a better place to live.

Recognizing the opportunity—and responsibility—that comes with this knowledge, the Foundation invited community members to continue the dialogue about how we can improve civil behavior in our communities. More than 100 community volunteers from four counties accepted, and Because It Matters was born.

Because It Matters

Because It Matters is a community-wide initiative to promote civility in our neighborhoods, our schools, and our workplaces. It is a campaign to encourage citizens of our region to communicate in a more respectful way, improving public discourse. Because It Matters encourages individuals to deliver a positive attitude and perform good deeds. The result is a strengthening of our social fabric, making our region an even better place to live.
