Encore Broadcast: Thursdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Join host Jack Perkins for an all-new volume of A Gulf Coast Journal. Each month, Jack highlights the people and places that make our Gulf Coast region such a rich and varied community. This month on the Journal:

Novel Adventures
Visit Doc Ford Country as Jack chats with best-selling Florida novelist Randy Wayne White, who just released his 15th novel, Black Widow, based on the adventures of marine biologist Doc Ford and his quirky pals at Dinkin’s Bay.

Agape Flights
At Venice Municipal Airport, tiny air cargo service Agape Flights aims to make a big difference by supporting the work of Christian missionaries in Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.

Ski-A-Rees
These amateur acrobats really know how to ride a wave! The Sarasota Ski-A-Rees jump high, flip like fish, and even juggle on waterskis. Their famous, free waterskiing show has lasted for generations, and you can see their 4dazzling performance right here in our own backyard.

WEDU

Sarasota County resident Jack Perkins, formerly of NBC News and A&E's Biography, hosts this locally produced, Emmy Award-winning monthly series showcasing Venice, Sarasota, and adjacent communities.

In October 2003, Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice awarded WEDU a grant for $178,014, then the largest programming grant the station had ever received, to produce this monthly television magazine focusing on Sarasota County. Since then, the Foundation has awarded WEDU grants to produce 12 new episodes of the program each year. In 2005, WEDU was honored with three awards at the 2005 Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards.

"Our Foundation Board wants to highlight for our communities and the entire WEDU viewing area how connected we all are, and to illuminate the wonderful stories and good works happening in our communities every day," said Teri A. Hansen, President/CEO Gulf Coast Community Foundation, upon the award of the first grant for the program. "We see WEDU and A Gulf Coast Journal as a perfect way to accomplish both goals."

"This is the future of public television stations," said Richard Lobo, President and CEO of WEDU. "WEDU is returning to its roots and featuring more and more local programming."
