Program vs. Capital Grants

The Foundation makes grants that contribute significantly to improving the quality of life of the citizens and the communities it serves. The Foundation envisions a region known for endowed philanthropy, a vital nonprofit community, and the ability to address emerging issues. Grants are generally defined as either program or capital.

Program Grants: A program grant typically supports direct or indirect services, or the purchase of equipment or items that are not meant to be permanently installed or affixed. Salaries and other expenses may also potentially be funded if clearly needed to provide the services, equipment, or items supported by the grant.

Capital Grants: Capital is defined as real estate, bricks and mortar (including new construction, remodeling, and acquiring an existing structure), and permanent fixtures added either to a structure or to real estate. Applications for capital projects may be made only through the two annual capital grant cycles. To encourage green building practices, the Foundation will only award grants for new-construction capital projects that, upon completion, are certified as green according to the most current Green Commercial Building Designation Standard of the Florida Green Building Coalition, Inc. Capital grant awards will be limited to a portion of the total project that demonstrates the Foundation’s commitment and also strongly encourages meaningful community giving in support of the project.

Grant Application Process

Step 1:  Submission of an Application
To apply for a Foundation grant, a nonprofit organization must submit the completed program or capital application to the Foundation by the corresponding deadline. The required application form is available for download as either a WORD or PDF form. Upon submission, the application will be reviewed for completeness by Foundation staff.

Step 2:  Review of Application
Completed applications of $20,000 and under will be reviewed by the Foundation Board's Philanthropy Committee for funding recommendations to the Board of Directors. For applications of $20,001 and over, a panel of community volunteers will review the applications, conduct site visits, and rate applications for review by the Philanthropy Committee and recommendation to the Board of Directors.

Step 3:  Grant Decisions
Applicants will be notified of grant decisions immediately after the conclusion of a grant cycle. Grant awards are only assured after the application/review process is complete and the Board of Directors has made final determinations.

Step 4:  Grant Payments
Payment of a grant will be made as soon as possible after receipt of a signed Grant Agreement and the satisfaction of any special conditions in the Agreement.

Step 5:  Reporting to the Foundation
A final report (and interim reports for multiyear grants) is required in order to satisfy the Foundation's fiduciary responsibilities and to better understand the unique value-added outcomes provided through your grant. Additional information is available in the "Outcomes and Evaluations" sidebar on the right side of this page to help your oranization capture and report grant outcomes to the Foundation, your board, donors, and the community. Please also refer to your copy of the signed Grant Agreement and special conditions for outcomes reporting requirements.
