It's Time For The Final Vote
The Foundation presented four worthy nonprofit grant proposals to our Future Fund donors in 2010. Through an online vote, you narrowed your choice to two organizations: Education Foundation of Sarasota County and Laurel Civic Association.
In July and August, Future Funders visited both organizations to learn more about the impact of their projects. If you couldn't attend, here is a brief synopsis of what we learned at each site visit.
Education Foundation of Sarasota County The education gap in our school system is largely the result of economic disparities between the haves and have-nots. The Texcellence Computer Donation Program reduces this gap by providing low-income families with a free computer along with software and training. Technology in the home gives the whole family access to things many of us take for granted, such as the Internet, Microsoft Office software, and educational games. Our $10,000 gift would allow the program to donate 125 computers to deserving students.
Laurel Civic Association Laurel Civic is the only youth-serving organization between Venice and Sarasota, and it cares for hundreds of teens each year. There is a large gym, reading room, playground, field, and community rooms for family meetings and other services such as food distribution. Laurel Civic is run by three staff and loyal community volunteers. The families and teens in the area depend on the organization for support and a positive atmosphere. Our $10,000 would be a significant gift to this organization and help with program expenses.
