Gulf Coast Community Foundation awarded $4,282,305 in donor grants and small Community Grants in the first quarter of 2013.

The bulk of the grants—more than $4.15 million worth—were made at the recommendation of individuals or organizations that have created donor advised or designated funds at Gulf Coast. The largest donor grant was $349,012 awarded from the Court Family Foundation to benefit Florida Studio Theatre. Philanthropist and BookStore1Sarasota owner Georgia Court recommended the grant in late January to support major renovations at FST.

Gulf Coast awarded $79,379 in Community Grants ($10,000 or less) from endowed funds at the foundation, including the Venice Endowment Fund; the Anna V. Pfister, Nellie Mae Koss, and Helen K. Hadden Memorial Endowment Fund; the Ina L. Donnan Field of Interest Fund; and several others.

Gulf Coast also awarded $47,552 in grants funded through its GulfCoastGives.org website between January 1 and March 31. These grants, to support urgent charity projects at local nonprofit organizations, were funded primarily by online contributions from community members.  The Gulf Coast Gives grants ranged from $70 to purchase learning aids for a local kindergarten class to $17,000 to enable the Library Foundation for Sarasota County to extend the Imagination Library reading program, which provides a new, age-appropriate book by mail to nearly 2,500 children every month.
